ATHENS, Ga. - San Diego State tennis player Oliver Maiberger advanced to the second round of the NCAA Championships at the University of Georgia after defeating second-seeded Alex Kim of Stanford Thursday afternoon.

Maiberger, a sophomore, upset the defending national champion Kim, 7-5, 6-2. The match marked the third meeting between Kim and Maiberger. The two met for the first time in the second round of last year's championships. Kim was victorious and went on to win the tournament. They met again in a dual match this February. This time the victory went to Maiberger, snapping Kim's 17-match winning streak.

No. 24 Maiberger will face the winner of a first round match between Illinois' Graydon Oliver and Tennessee's Adam Carey in Friday's second round.

Maiberger is the lone Aztec competing in the 64-draw singles championship. The Mountain West Conference Player of the Year posted a 20-3 dual match record this season, including an 18-match winning streak lasting from Feb. 11 to April 18.

Maiberger will also team with senior Adam Webster to compete in the 32-draw doubles championship. The duo will play the fourth-seeded team of Peter Luczak and David Mullins of Fresno State, Friday afternoon.

Complete tournament information is available on the official University of Georgia website, www.georgiadogs.com.
