SAN DIEGO - San Diego State men's tennis player Oliver Maiberger defeated 56th-ranked Victor Romero of Tulane, 6-3, 6-3 on Wednesday to advance to the second round of the NCAA Singles Championship in College Station, Texas.

The junior, ranked 26th nationally, won seven straight games en route to his third consecutive first-round victory in the NCAA Tournament. Maiberger trailed 3-2 in the first set, but claimed the final four games, breaking Romero's serve twice in the process.

The Aztec junior then opened the second set by winning the first three games, breaking Romero's serve for the third consecutive game at 1-0. Maiberger won all nine of his service games in the match.

Maiberger improves to 27-9 this season after winning for the tenth time in his last 12 outings. The junior is 26-1 this season against players currently ranked outside the nation's top 25.

Maiberger will face 22nd-ranked Marcin Matowski of UCLA in tomorrow's round of 32. Although the Aztecs and Bruins played twice this season, Maiberger and Matowski did not face one another because the Aztec junior played number one singles and the Bruin sophomore played in the number three and four slots.

Although the two did not meet in singles, they have met as members of two of the top-three ranked doubles teams. Maiberger and Ryan Redondo, the third-ranked doubles team, has defeated the UCLA duo of Matkowski and Jean-Julien Rojer, the top-ranked doubles team, twice this season.

Maiberger and Redondo will also begin play in the 32-team NCAA Doubles Championship on Thursday against Matias Boeker and Bo Hodge of Georgia in the first round. The duo, which earned All-America honors on Tuesday, posted a 26-8 record this season, including a 14-6 mark in dual action. They have won six consecutive matches and have seven victories over doubles teams currently ranked in the top 10 nationally.

Times for tomorrow's singles and doubles matches will be set later this evening.
