Frogs fall to second-ranked Pepperdine, 4-0 TCU ends season 18-10

MALIBU, Calif. - The 32nd-ranked TCU men's tennis team saw its season come to an end after falling to second-ranked Pepperdine 4-0 on Sunday afternoon. The Frogs finished the 2006 season with an 18-10 overall record to go along with a Mountain West Conference Championship. The Waves established a strong rhythm early in the match by taking victories at courts No. 1 and No. 2 in doubles to gain a 1-0 advantage. The 47th-ranked duo of Ivor Lovrak and Pedro Rico downed TCU's sophomore tandem of Cosmin Cotet and Andrei Mlendea 8-3 at No. 2. In a highly anticipated rematch, the third-rated team from Pepperdine of Andre Begemann and Scott Doerner downed 27th-ranked Rafael Abreu and Jordan Freitas by a score of 8-5 at No. 1. The first matchup between these two teams on March 25, at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center, saw the Waves' pair prevail by the same margin. Pepperdine moved to a 2-0 advantage in the match after Richard Johnson defeated junior Radu Barbu 6-0, 6-3 at No. 5. Rico, currently ranked 31st in the ITA singles poll, picked up his second victory of the day by dispatching 91st-ranked Abreu 6-4, 6-2 at No. 2. Omar Altmann picked up his first victory of the match and clinched a spot in the Sweet 16 for the Waves by posting a 6-4, 6-2 decision over Freitas at No. 6.
