SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Senior Divan Coetzee, ranked 22nd nationally, showed why he was honored as the Mountain West Conference Player of the Year, winning the tournament championship for the first-seeded Lobos (16-5, 5-0) over third-seeded, host San Diego State, 4-3. New Mexico claimed both the regular season and tournament championships this season.

The Aztecs started out claiming the doubles point. Felix Hardt and Ryan Redondo downed juniors David Kowalski and Ryan Stotland at No. 1, 8-4. Markus Dickhardt and Dontia Haynes clinched the point with their 8-3 win over Coetzee and freshman Hiroud Akhavan at No. 2. Daniel Jung and Armando Carrascosa were leading 5-4 at No. 3 over senior Jasmin Hodzic and sophomore Henry Gers.

Dickhardt gave SDSU a 2-0 lead with his win (6-0, 6-2) at No. 3 singles over Stotland. Hodzic garnered the Lobos' first point with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Michael Coehlo at No. 6. Akhavan evend the match with his 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 5 over Haynes. Kowalski then pushed the Lobos into the 3-2 lead with a 1-6, 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 2 over Redondo. Jung kept the Aztecs alive, netting a 7-6(10), 6-1 win at No. 4 over Gers.

With the match tied, it was up to Coetzee to dispose of Hardt. Hardt won the first set but couldn't hold on as Coetzee won 6-7(3), 6-2, 7-5. Coetzee's win was his 37th this season and 96th of his career. He tied the UNM career record for wins with his victory over Hardt.

The Lobos now advance to the NCAA Tournament with the conference's automic bid.
