San Diego State Wins MWC Men's Tennis Championship No. 1 seed San Diego State defeats No. 2 seed BYU, 4-2.
April 30, 2005 Championship Photo Gallery | Complete Tournament Photo Gallery SAN DIEGO, CALIF. - No. 1 seed San Diego State defeated No. 2 seed BYU, 4-2, to win the Mountain West Conference Men's Tennis Championship, Saturday at the Barnes Tennis Center. It was the Aztecs' third championship in the past four seasons and their fifth title appearance overall in the MWC's six seasons. San Diego State came out strong in doubles play as the Aztecs won at No. 1 and 2 doubles to take the 1-0 lead. Benedikt Stronk and Armando Carrascosa defeated Jose Lechuga and Nima Roshan to win 8-5 at No. 1, while Dontia Haynes and Daniel Jung won at No. 2, also by an 8-5 score. In singles play, BYU tied up the match as Christian Hand defeated Dontia Haynes of SDSU at No. 5, 6-1, 6-4. Daniel Jung bounced back for the Aztecs, defeating Jonathan Sanchez at No. 6 singles, 6-3, 6-3. Shane LaPorte of BYU tied things up at two apiece as he defeated Chris Groh at No. 4 singles. Markus Dickhardt won for the Aztecs at No. 2 singles, 7-6, 7-5, before No. 1 player Benedikt Stronk clinched the match for San Diego State. The No. 81-ranked Stronk defeated Nima Roshan, 6-7, 6-3, 6-0 to give SDSU its fourth point and the team title.
The championship win was the No. 41-ranked Aztecs' 13th consecutive victory dating back to March 12. San Diego State is now 17-5 on the season, while No. 57-ranked BYU drops to 17-7.
