San Diego State And BYU Advance To The Finals Of The Mountain West Conference Men's Tennis Championship BYU shut out Air Force, 4-0, while San Diego State held on to defeat UNLV, 4-3.
April 29, 2005 SAN DIEGO - No. 2 seed BYU shut out Air Force, 4-0, while No. 1 seed San Diego State held on to defeat No. 4 seed UNLV, 4-3, in the semifinals of the Mountain West Conference Men's Tennis Championship, Friday at the Barnes Tennis Center. The Cougars will take on the Aztecs in the championship match, Saturday, at noon at the Barnes Tennis Center. In the first semifinal, BYU clinched the doubles point by winning at No. 2 and 3 doubles, including an 8-5 win by Dominik Kaufhold and James Ludlow at No. 2 to clinch the point. During singles play, the Cougars dominated as they won at No. 2, 5 and 6 singles. Christian Hand won easily at No. 5 singles, 6-1, 6-0, while Jonathan Sanchez was also victorious at No. 6 singles, 6-0, 6-3. In the second men's semifinal, the Aztecs won the doubles point with identical 8-5 decisions at No. 2 and 3 doubles. In singles play, San Diego State led 3-2 with two matches left. After UNLV's Romain Massaro defeated SDSU's Dontia Haynes, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 5 singles to tie the match at three, the Aztecs' Markus Dickhardt upset No. 98-ranked Joel Kielbowicz, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2, to clinch the final point. It is the No. 41-ranked Aztecs' fifth trip to the MWC championship title match in six seasons, while No. 57-ranked BYU is in the men's final for the third time. San Diego State defeated BYU in 2002 and New Mexico to win the 2003 crown, while the Aztecs lost in last year's final and in 2000, both to New Mexico. BYU defeated UNLV in 2001.
