April 29, 2004
SAN DIEGO -- Two-time defending league champion San Diego State routed Air Force, 4-0, in the quarterfinal round of the 2004 Mountain West Conference Men's Tennis Championship Thursday afternoon at the Barnes Center. The Aztecs claimed the doubles point and won the opening set on all six singles courts before clinching the match just a little over two hours after it began. San Diego State got off to a roaring start, picking up an 8-0 win from the number three doubles team of Michael Coehlo and Daniel Jung. The nation's 56th-ranked team of Ryan Redondo and Felix Hardt clinched the point with an 8-2 win at number one doubles. The middle portion of the SDSU lineup closed out the match as the Aztecs received victories at the number three, four and five positions. At four, Jung dropped just one game in recording a 6-1, 6-0 win. SDSU went up 3-0 when Mountain West Conference Freshman of the Year Markus Dickhardt was a 6-1, 6-2 winner. The Aztecs advanced to the semifinal round with Dontia Haynes, 6-3, 6-3 decision at number five. The Aztecs advance to tomorrow's semifinal round where they will face second-seeded UNLV. The Rebels defeated SDSU 4-3 earlier this month in Las Vegas. The match is scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m. PDT at the Barnes Tennis Center.
