SDSU and Utah Win First Round Matches Aztecs and Utes clinch a spot in the semifinal round.

SAN DIEGO - San Diego State and Utah won matches to advance into the semifinal round of the 2004 Mountain West Conference Men's Tennis Championship Thursday afternoon at the Barnes Tennis Center. The fifth-seeded Utes won four of the six singles matches to claim a 4-3 victory over fourth-seeded Brigham Young. Utah clinched a spot in the semifinal round when Tomasz Grzyb posted a 7-6 (5), 6-3 victory at number two singles to break a three-all tie. Brigham Young claimed the doubles point and received victories in singles and doubles from Erik Nyman and Nima Rosham. The defending conference champions and third-seeded Aztecs advanced following a 4-0 victory over sixth-seeded Air Force. San Diego State claimed the doubles point and received wins from the three, four and five positions in the lineup. SDSU's Ryan Redondo, Markus Dickhardt and Daniel Jung were straight set winners on Thursday. The Mountain West Conference Men's Tennis Championship continues tomorrow with top-seeded New Mexico facing Utah at 11 a.m. PDT and second-seeded UNLV facing San Diego State at 2:30 p.m. PDT. The tournament championship match is scheduled for Saturday at noon PDT.
