April 28, 2006
SAN DIEGO, Calif. - After a long day of competition, including their win against UNLV (4-3), the University of Utah men's tennis team will be coming home from the MWC Tournament off of a loss to SDSU (4-0). The fourth-seeded and 61st-ranked Utes gave a solid effort against SDSU, but still fell short during competition. Utah had a three hour break after their win over UNLV Friday before facing the SDSU Aztecs at 4:00 p.m. PT. This was the first match in the tournament for the top-seeded and 48th-ranked SDSU. San Diego State swept doubles right out of the gate with 8-4 victories in all three spots. Competition was interrupted again Friday at No. 1, No. 5, and No. 6 singles. Tomasz Grzyb (at No. 2), Nick Coutts (at No. 3), and Wes Hancock (at No. 4) all stomached defeat under the Aztecs. Grzyb lost to Markus Dickhardt (6-2, 6-4), Benedikt Stronk defeated Coutts (6-1, 6-3), and Hancock lost his match (6-2, 6-1) to Stephan Timu. The University of Utah men's tennis team finished their season Friday with a 15-10 record. Friday's competition not only ends the season for the Utes, but was also the last time seniors Tomasz Grzyb and Nick Coutts will be playing for Utah.
