San Diego State Advances To Finals Of MWC Men's Tennis Championships

Aztecs upend Utes, 4-0, in semifinals

No. 1 seed San Diego State moved past No. 4 seed Utah, 4-0, in the men's semifinals of the Mountain West Conference Tennis Championships. The defending tournament champion Aztecs will make their fifth straight appearance in the MWC Championship finals on Saturday at 11 a.m. PT at Barnes Tennis Center. This also marks the fourth straight year the No. 1 seed has made it to the finals. The top seed has won the last three MWC tournament crowns.

The Aztecs won the doubles point after taking all three matches at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 by identical 8-4 scores. SDSU also picked up singles points at the No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 positions. Markus Dickhardt posted a win at No. 2 singles over Tomasz Grzyb (6-2, 6-4), Benedikt Stronk defeated Nick Coutts at No. 3 singles (6-1, 6-3) and Stephan Timu downed Wes Hancock in No. 4 singles (6-2, 6-1) to round out SDSU's scoring.

San Diego State will attempt to repeat as MWC tournament champions for the second time. The Aztecs won back-to-back crowns in 2002 and 2003. SDSU will face No. 2 seed TCU in the championship. The Aztecs edged the Frogs, 4-3, in their only regular season match on April 16 in Salt Lake City, Utah.
