No. 72 New Mexico Falls to No. 71 BYU 4-2

The Loss Will End the Lobos Season at 11-9

April 27, 2006

SAN DIEGO CA - The No. 72 ranked University of New Mexico men's tennis team had to wait out two rain delays before coming up just short to No. 71 BYU today in San Diego. UNM needed to win four of the six singles matches to claim the victory and move into the semifinals of the Mountain West Conference Championships and face TCU. The loss moved the Lobos record to 11-9.

The match started out with a fierce battle at the No.1 doubles position with Max Jones and Kamil Pajkowski losing in a tie breaker to James Ludlow and Dominik Kaufhold of BYU 9(4)-8. With BYU claiming the first match New Mexico would need to win both of the remaining matches to grab the first point, rain set in and after a lengthy delay UNM was only able to win one of the two as BYU took an early 1-0 advantage.

The teams moved to singles where four of the six matches were decided quickly. Jones downed Ludlow 6-1, 6-4 at No. 1 and Pajkowski handled Ivan Kokurin 6-3, 6-1 at No. 4. BYU took two matches when senior Eric Conklin and freshman Chandler Brass fell at positions 5 and 6 respectively.

UNM was down 3-2 and would need both of the remaining matches in order to win. New Mexico freshman Graeme Kassautzki and Johnny Parkes both lost the first set but would come back to win the second. In the third and deciding set at No. 3 Kassautzki came up just short as he fell to Kaufhold 7-5, 1-6, 6-2. With the match decided in the Cougar's favor the No. 2 match was stopped as Parkes led in the third set 4-3.

New Mexico finished the season at 11-9 with a 2-5 record against MWC opponents. Senior Eric Conklin who has likely played his last match as a Lobo was able to win his doubles match at No. 3. The NCAA selections will take place on Tuesday May 2nd it is unlikely that anyone from New Mexico will be selected.
