No. 5 San Diego State Defeats No. 4 UNLV to Advance to the Semifinals of the 2011 Mountain West Men's Tennis Championship
April 27, 2011 FORT COLLINS, Colo. - Javier Pulgar earned the fourth point at No. 2 singles as fifth-seeded San Diego State rallied from a 3-0 deficit to defeat fourth-seeded UNLV, 4-3, in the quarterfinals of the 2011 Mountain West Men's Tennis Championship in Fort Collins, Colo. The Aztecs will face No. 1 BYU in the semifinals at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 29 at the University Tennis Complex. The Rebels earned the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles positions. The UNLV duo of Mehdi Bouras and Johannes Markel won at the top of the lineup, 9-7, over Tim Schulz van Endert and Pulgar, while the duo of Rene Ruegamer and Bernard Schoeman helped the Rebels secure the doubles point with an 8-4 victory over Giovanni Vaglietti and Jose Sierra Short at the No. 3 spot. UNLV jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the dual after consecutive straight-sets wins in singles action, as Alex Bull defeated Juan Florez, 6-3, 6-4, at the fifth singles spot and Bouras, the Mountain West Player of the Year award recipient, downed Vaglietti, 6-4, 6-4, at the No. 1 position. Andre Feliz earned the first point of the match for San Diego State at No. 3 singles with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Ruegamer, while Sierra Short picked up the Aztecs' second point at No. 6 singles with a come-from-behind win (3-6, 6-3, 6-0) over Charlie Alvarado. San Diego State evened the dual at 3-3 after Schulz van Endert knocked off Markel, 7-6 (7-5), 4-6, 6-0 at the No. 4 position. Pulgar put the win away for the Aztecs with a 6-4, 6-7 (1-7), 7-5 win over Tamas Batyi.
