April 27, 2002
LAS VEGAS - The 63rd-ranked New Mexico men's tennis team won a close doubles point and split singles play to squeak out a 4-3 victory over unranked Utah and earn third place at the Mountain West Conference Championship at the Fertitta Tennis Complex Saturday. The Lobos, seeded third, improved to 17-9 while the fourth-seeded Utes closed their season at 15-12. After the teams split the first two completed doubles matches, Lobos Diego Garza and Michael Polasek emerged from a 9-7 tiebreaker to prevail 9-8 over Daniel Carlsson and Tyler Poulson at the second position. New Mexico was without No. 1 player Divan Coetzee because of injury and the Utes took advantage in singles play by winning both of the top two positions as well as a straight-setter at No. 5. UNM, however, got wins from Ryan Stotland at No. 4 and Brent Salazar on court six. The day's only three-set match came at the third spot and John Kowalski clinched it with a 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 victory over Nick Yip to give his team a 2-1 record in the tournament.
