Men's Teams Close Out Quarterfinal Action at the 2007 MWC Tennis Championships BYU, UNLV and TCU advance to to meet San Diego State in Friday's semifinals.

Quarterfinal action at the 2007 MWC Men's Tennis Championship ended Thursday with BYU, UNLV and TCU advancing to Friday's semifinal rounds at the U.S. Air Force Academy. As the No. 1 seed in the tournament, San Diego State received a bye to the semifinals.
No. 5 BYU 4, No. 4 New Mexico 3
The fifth-seeded BYU Cougars advanced to the semifinals of the 2007 Mountain West Conference Men's Tennis Championships with a thrilling 4-3 victory Thursday over No. 4-seed New Mexico at the Air Force Academy. BYU evened its record at 13-13 and will face top-seeded San Diego State in the semis on Friday, April 27 at 10 a.m. New Mexico fell to 14-9. The Cougars jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after winning the Nos. 2 and 3 doubles matches. Chip Hand and Jonathan Sanchez opened things up with an 8-5 victory at the No. 2 position over UNM's duo of Chris and Johnny Parkes. BYU's No. 3 team of Cassidy Mears and Cale Planck clinched the point for the Cougars with an 8-6 victory over Graeme Kassautzki and Chandler Brass. The No. 1 match was pulled off the court with BYU leading, 7-6. There were plenty of great battles in the six singles matches, with four of them going to three sets. One of the straight-set matches was at the No. 5 spot, where UNM's Chris Parkes evened the team match with a 6-2, 6-3 decision over Mears. Kassautzki then gave the Lobos a 2-1 lead by defeating Dominik Kaufhold, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 at No. 3. BYU's Sanchez tied the match at 2-all with a tough, 6-4, 7-6(6) victory over Miles Bugby at the No. 4 position. The Cougars then took a 3-2 advantage as Planck snuck by Kamil Pajkowski, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, at No. 6, but Johnny Parkes evened the match at 3-all with a come-from-behind 4-6, 6-1, 7-6(1) victory over BYU's Hand at the No. 2 spot. In thrilling fashion, the deciding match at No. 1 went to a third-set tiebreak. UNM's Max Jones won the first set, 7-5, over BYU's James Ludlow, but Ludlow battled back to take the next two sets in tiebreaks, winning each of them 7-1 to clinch the match for BYU. Singles

No. 3 UNLV 4, No. 6 Utah 0
The UNLV Rebels shut out the Utah Utes, 4-0, Thursday in the quarterfinals of the of the 2007 Mountain West Conference Men's Tennis Championships, held at the Air Force Academy. UNLV, seeded No. 3 at the tournament, improved to 11-13 and will face the No. 2 seed TCU in the semifinals on Friday, April 27 at 2 p.m. With the loss, the sixth-seeded Utes fell to 12-10. The Rebels took an early 1-0 lead with victories at the Nos. 1 and 2 doubles matches. The No. 2 match came off the court first as Jonathan Hooper and Wesley Burrows handled Jason Smits and Othman Zerouali-Ouariti, 8-2. Brett Hunter and Elliot Wronski won the No. 1 match, 8-5, over Zach Ganger and Miron Mann to win the point. The No. 3 match was halted with UNLV leading. The No. 1 match was pulled off the court with BYU leading, 7-6. UNLV kept it going in singles play, winning the first three matches off the court in straight sets. Hunter outgunned Smits, 6-3, 6-3 at the No. 4 spot to get things started. Wronski followed suit with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Ganger at the No. 1 position and Burrows clinched the match for UNLV with a 6-2, 7-6(3) victory over Wes Hancock at the No. 3 spot. The other three singles matches were halted in the second set.

No. 2 TCU 4, No. 7 Air Force 0
The TCU men's tennis team advanced to the semifinals of the 2007 Mountain West Conference Men's Tennis Championships Thursday with a 4-0 victory over Air Force at the Academy. TCU, seeded No. 2 at the tournament and ranked 68th in the nation, improved to 10-11 and will face the No. 3 seed, UNLV, in the semifinals on Friday, April 27 at 2 p.m. With the loss, Air Force ended its season with an 11-16 record. The Horned Frogs took an early 1-0 lead by winning the top two doubles matches. TCU's duo of Cosmin Cotet and Kriegler Brink won the No. 1 match, 8-2, over Robby Alexander and Ryan White. The doubles point was clinched when Radu Barbu and Chris Biro downed Brett Rodgers and Austin Francis, 8-5, at the No. 2 position. TCU was winning the No. 3 match, 7-6, when the match was halted. Stuart Row gave the Frogs a 2-0 lead with a decisive, 6-1, 6-0 victory over Greg Ferry at No. 6 singles. Brink made it 3-0 with a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 4 singles over White, who moved up from the No. 5 spot after Air Force's Mike Youn was unable to play. TCU's Cosmin Cotet, ranked 103rd in the nation, clinched the match with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Robby Alexander at the No. 1 position. The other three singles matches were halted at that time.
