BYU defeats Air Force, 4-2, for third place at MWC Championships Falcons finish 2003 campaign at 21-7
April 26, 2003
The seedings have held true throughout the 2003 MWC Men's Tennis Championships, and the third-place match was no different Saturday as third-seeded BYU defeated fourth-seeded Air Force, 4-2. The Falcons' season ends with a 21-7 overall record. Two freshmen posted victories for Air Force, including Shannon Buck, who defeated BYU's Erik Nyman, 2-6, 6-2, 6-0 at the No. 1 singles spot to improve his overall record to 26-1 and a perfect 8-0 against MWC opponents. Buck ties the most wins by an Air Force player at No. 1 singles, equaling Jerry Ledzinski's mark of 26 in 1995. Buck also has posted the second-best single-season winning-percentage (.963) in school history. He will find out next week if he earns a bid to the 2003 NCAA Championships. Freshman Trevor Johnson notched AFA's other victory on Saturday, defeating Alonso Medina, 6-1, 6-2 at No. 5 singles. BYU won singles matches at No. 2, 4 and 6. Carlos Lozano won the No. 2 match, beating AFA's Eric Pittman in a tough three-setter, 6-1, 1-6, 6-4, while Jeff Olsen beat Justin Mancinelli, 6-3, 6-43 at No. 4. Anton Rudjuk beat Chris Dong, 7-6, 6-4 at the No. 6 spot. The Cougars had taken an early 1-0 lead with victories at No. 1 and 3 doubles. Air Force's record of 21-7 is the best since the 1998 season when the Falcons went 22-6. Head coach Rich Gugat has a career record of 661-187 and is still fourth on the list for most wins by an active NCAA Division I coach.
