LAS VEGAS - Top-seeded San Diego State shut out fourth seed Utah 4-0 to advance through the semifinals of the Mountain West Conference Men's Tennis Championship at the Fertitta Tennis Complex Friday.

The Aztecs, ranked 28th, improved to 16-8 overall by winning their sixth straight while the Utes fell to 15-11.

Playing through windy but warm conditions, SDSU began the match by winning both of the completed doubles matches for one team point. That included the nation's third-ranked duo of Oliver Maiberger and Ryan Redondo outlasting No. 25 David Mercier and Nick Yip 8-6 at the top position.

In singles play, the Aztecs dominated. Felix Hardt was the first player off the court after downing Yip 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3. Valentino Pest finished off Corrie Scheepers 6-1, 6-4 at No. 2 to make it 3-0 and Gabe Coren won 6-1, 7-5 over Daniel Lohff on court six to clinch it. The remaining three matches were halted.

"We played well in not real great weather conditions," SDSU head coach John Nelson said. "Sometimes having a bye is not the best thing because your opponent has settled in but we fought hard and I am proud of the guys."

SDSU will play second seed BYU in Saturday's final, which begins at 2 p.m. PDT. Utah and New Mexico will play for third place beginning at 10 a.m.

"We have beaten BYU twice this year but we expect it to be a good match tomorrow," Nelson said. The Aztecs won 4-3 over the Cougars on January 26 in Boise, Idaho, and 6-1 on April 13 in Salt Lake City.
