Air Force falls to top-seed San Diego State, 4-1, at MWC Championships Plays BYU for third place on Saturday

With the doubles point in hand, top-seeded San Diego State went on to win three singles matches Friday to pick up a 4-1 victory over Air Force in the first semifinal game of the 2003 MWC Men's Tennis Championships. The 30th-ranked Aztecs enjoyed a 2-0 advantage after winning the No. 2 and 3 doubles matches and then the No. 6 singles contest. In that match, SDSU's Gabe Coren defeated Chris Dong in straight sets 6-1, 7-5. Air Force kept the match close at 2-1 as freshman Shannon Buck, the 96th-ranked player in the country, defeated 34th-ranked Oliver Maiberger, 6-1, 6-3, in a matchup of this season's MWC Co-Players of the Year. Buck improves to 25-1 overall this season and 7-0 against MWC foes. The final two singles points went to the Aztecs with straight set victories at No. 4 and 5. The Aztecs' Daniel Jung beat Justin Mancinelli 6-0, 7-6, while teammate Armando Carrascosa defeated Trevor Johnson 7-6, 6-3, at the No. 5 spot. The remaining matches were suspended. San Diego State advances to the title match on Saturday against New Mexico, which beat BYU, 4-0. Air Force will play BYU in Saturday's third-place match at 10 a.m.
