New Mexico blanks Air Force at MWC Tourney Falcons to play in fifth-place match on Friday
April 25, 2002
Third-seeded New Mexico did not lose a set en route to a 4-0 victory over sixth-seed Air Force Thursday in the opening round of the Mountain West Conference Men's Tennis Championship at the Fertitta Tennis Complex in Las Vegas, Nev. The Lobos, ranked 63rd in the country, improved to 16-8 overall while the Falcons fell to 14-10. UNM began the day by taking the Nos. 2 and 3 doubles matches to claim one team point. Ryan Stotland and Brent Salazar defeated Eric Pittman and Tyler McClung, 8-5, at No. 2, while Divan Coetzee and David Kowalski won the No. 3 match, 8-4, over AFA's Kyle Rainey and Justin Mancinelli. The No. 1 match was not completed due to the Lobos winning two matches. In singles play, UNM's John Kowalski struck first, winning 6-2, 6-1 over McClung at the No. 5 position. Stotland followed suit by downing Phil Yim, 6-2, 6-3 at No. 6, then Coetzee clinched the team victory with a 6-4, 6-0 triumph over Pittman at the No. 1 slot. UNM was also leading the three other matches, all of which were halted. The Lobos will face second-seed BYU Friday in one of two semifinals, while Air Force will play the loser of the UNLV-Utah match for fifth-place.
