ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Divan Coetzee won a three-set match in the day's final match as the University of New Mexico men's tennis team beat the University of Utah 4-3 in a key conference match Friday afternoon at the Lobo Tennis Club. The Lobos improved to 12-7 on the year, and are now 2-1 in conference action. The Utes drop to 11-8, and are 0-1 in conference play. New Mexico faces BYU on Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Lobo Tennis Club.

"This was another good tennis match, something I expected today," head coach Alan Dils said. "I knew Utah would come ready to fight, but we fought just as hard. I am happy with the way we have been competing the past few weeks. To be successful in this league, you have to compete and out-fight your opponents, and that is what we did today and last week against UNLV."

Utah won two of the three doubles matches to earn the doubles point, but New Mexico won three of the first four singles matches to take a 3-2 lead with only Coetzee and Michael Polasek left playing in singles. Polasek held a 5-2 advantage in the third set, but Utah's Nicholas Yip stormed back to even things at 5-5, then eventually won the match 7-4 in the third-set tiebreaker.

Coetzee then clinched things for New Mexico at the No. 1 spot, beating Utah's David Mercier in three sets, 7-5, 1-6, 6-3. David Kowalski, John Kowalski and Ryan Stotland also earned singles victories for the Lobos, while the doubles team of David Kowalski an Coetzee earned a doubles win.
