MWC Men's Golfer Of The Month For October BYU's Jake Ellison earns this month's award.
Nov. 1, 2005 COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - BYU junior Jake Ellison has been named the Mountain West Conference Men's Golfer of the Month for October. It marks the first time in his career that he has received the monthly award. Ellison recorded three top-10 finishes during the month of October, including a career best tie for second at the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate. In nine rounds, he recorded a 69.7 stroke average and posted three rounds of 66. He currently ranks second in the MWC with a 70.53 stroke average and is 28th in the Oct. 31 Golfweek individual rankings. The St. George, Utah, native posted his top collegiate finish as he tied for second (out of 60 individuals) at the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate Oct. 10-11. He shot a 5-under 208 (74-66-66) at the Old Overton Club in Birmingham, Ala., to lead BYU to a fifth-place finish. His back-to-back rounds of 66 were a two-round career-low. The field at Jerry Pate included six top-25 teams, including No. 1 Georgia and No. 2 Georgia Tech. At The Prestige in LaQuinta Calif., Oct. 17-18, Ellison placed sixth out of 96 individuals and led BYU to a second-place finish. In soggy and chilly conditions, he fired a 1-under 215 (74-70-71) to tie for the lowest score on the team in a field that featured five top-25 teams. In his final tournament of the month, Ellison tied for fourth out of 92 individuals at the Barona Collegiate Cup in Lakeside, Calif., Oct. 24-25. He fired an 11-under 205 (69-66-70) as the Cougars tied the course record (42-under 822) en route to a claiming the team championship.
