BYU Golf Hosts Cougar Day The bi-annual event is a means of fund raising for the golf program.
Oct. 3, 2001 PROVO, Utah - BYU men's golf program will host the 14th Cougar Day golf event on Thursday at Riverside Country Club. The bi-annual event is a means of fund raising for the golf program, as well as a way for BYU golf to give to the community. At 9:30 a.m., Pro golfer Johnny Miller and other former Cougars will give a clinic on swing technique. The clinic is free and the public is welcome to attend. "First and foremost, Cougar Day is a way for us to keep in touch with those players who built the great golf tradition at BYU," said current BYU head golf coach Bruce Brockbank. "Although it's a fund raiser for our golf program, it's really a time for past players and coaches to come together and renew friendships." At 10:15 a.m., current and former Cougars will square off in a longest ball competition, followed by the 5-person scramble tournament. Cougar Day now features 144 players, 108 of which are amateurs (mainly corporate sponsors) and 36 pros (mostly former BYU stars) serving as team captains. The players are paired in five-man teams and play a scramble format. "The thing that impresses me the most is the commitment of the former players to our program," said Brockbank. "I know they are all very busy with their careers, yet you call guys like Miller and Reid and all they say is 'Bruce I'll be there.' I want my current players to rub shoulders with that kind of commitment." Former BYU head coach Karl Tucker will be honored by the Varsity Club as part of the Cougar Day activities. The Varsity Club is giving Tucker the Foundation of Excellence Award, for the winning tradition he established for the BYU golf program.
"There will be a lot of food and prizes and it'll be a day full of
fun," said BYU head coach Bruce Brockbank.
