Rams Place Eighth at William H. Tucker

Fresno Lexus Classic up next for CSU.

Sept. 26, 2001

FORT COLLINS, Colo. - The Colorado State men's golf team returned to competition Sept. 21-22, in the William H. Tucker Tournament in Albuquerque, N.M. The Rams finished with a final score of 884, which put them at twenty over par and in eighth place in a field of twenty. The University of New Mexico, who hosted the tournament claimed top honors after finishing five under. Leading the way for the Rams was freshman David Schultz, who posted a total score of 219, leaving him in a tie for 18th overall. Brett Tobyne was in action for the first time this fall after missing the first meet of the season with a back ailment, finished at plus five for the tournament which included a final round of 71. Dallas Massey ended the tournament with a three round total of 222 and junior Tommy Sharp finished at plus eleven with a combined score of 227.

Schultz Not Playing Like a Typical Freshman
David Schultz, a freshman out of Fargo, N.D. is playing well beyond his years. Shultz was Colorado State's top finisher this passed weekend, finishing in a tie for 18th out of 103 golfers. Schultz posted rounds of: 70, 76, and 73. Coach Bermel was quoted as saying, "David played solid golf, he didn't play like a freshman". After finishing in a tie for 45th in the previous tournament, Shultz stepped up his play in the UNM Invitational and turned a lot of heads.

Bermel Says
"We played the first round well, shooting even par. In the last round we shot five over which I was pleased with because the pins were so hard to get to. Our team lost their focus in the middle rounds and began making bogies. We competed against some very tough teams and we beat teams in our district, so far we have been pretty successful for a young team."

What's Up Next... The Rams travel to Fresno, CA on October 5 to take part in the Fresno Lexus Classic. Head Coach Jamie Bermel said five of the six spots are filled (Laird, Massey, Schultz, Sharp, Tobyne), and the final spot for the tournament will be filled by the top finisher in the qualifying rounds in practice.
