Sept. 13, 2005

The Air Force golf team returns to action this weekend, Sept. 16-17, as they head to Albuquerque, N.M., for the 51st-annual William H. Tucker Invitational, hosted by New Mexico. The event, which is played at the 7,350-yard, par 72 Championship Course at UNM, will include 36 holes played on Friday and a final round of 18 holes on Saturday. Live scoring for the tournament will be available at Golfstat.com.

Last Time Out...
Last weekend, Air Force got the 2005 fall season off to an incredible start, capturing the team title at its own Falcon Invitational. The team fired below-par rounds of 281 and 286 on day one to build a comfortable lead and held on in the final round to end the tournament at 868 (+4), four strokes ahead of second-place Weber State.

Leading the way for Air Force was junior Tyler Goulding, who fired a 71 in each of his three rounds to finish tied for third at 3-under-par. Three other Falcons, Scott Redmond, Tyler Labrum and Bob Whitney, tied for 21st at 221 (+5), while Chad Follett, who fired a team-low 68 in round one, finished tied for 54th at 228.

In addition, the Air Force JV team finished in 15th place with a three-round score of 901, paced by freshman Andrew Gibson, who ended the tournament tied for 12th at 220 (+4).

The Field...
Twenty of the nation's top teams are slated to compete in this year's Tucker Invitational, including seven MWC teams. The full list follows with 2005 NCAA finish in parentheses:

Air Force, Arizona, Baylor, BYU (4), Colorado, Colorado State, Denver, Fresno State, Iowa State, Nevada, New Mexico (5), New Mexico JV, New Mexico State, Northwestern, San Diego State, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, UNLV (T8), UTEP, Wyoming.

Falcons in the Record Books...
Air Force made its mark in the school's record books with its performance at the season-opening Falcon Invitational. Its 54-hole total of 868 ranks as the fourth-lowest tournament score in school history.

Additionally, Tyler Goulding's three-round score of 213 is tied for 10th on the list of lowest individual tournament scores. Goulding now holds four scores listed in the top-15, more than any other golfer in Academy history.

Making History...
Air Force's win in its own tournament was just its third ever, the first since the Falcons tied the New Mexico JV squad for the win in 2001. In addition, this year's victory marks the team's first outright title in the tournament since the inaugural event was held in 1969. That year, Air Force captured the team trophy after playing just 18 holes of golf due to inclement weather.

Up Next...
Following the Tucker Invitational, the Falcons return to action when they head to Reno, Nev., Sept. 27-28, for the Wolf Pack Invitational, hosted by Nevada.
