Sept. 6, 2001

FORT COLLINS, Colo. - Colorado State's men's golf team begins its chase for an unprecedented seventh consecutive NCAA Championships appearance when the Rams open the 2001-02 season in the Badger Invitational, hosted by the University of Wisconsin in Madison. The 54-hole event will be played at the University Ridge Course in Madison, with 36 holes scheduled for Saturday and a concluding round of 18 holes to be played Sunday. Colorado State's men's golf program and the school's volleyball program are the only two sport programs in school history to have made six consecutive NCAA trips. Both squads enter their respective seasons with those streaks intact. Third-year coach Jamie Bermel has a mix of experience and youth on the 2001-02 squad, led by Martin Laird, who was 26th last year in the NCAA Regionals, the top figure by a Ram in the meet.

Lineup Set For Opening Meet, Tobyne Absent

Third-year coach Jamie Bermel has his five-player lineup in place for the team's first meet of the season. Leading the list is all-star candidate Martin Laird. Bermel said the rest of the lineup will include: Dallas Massey, Tommy Sharp, David Sharp, and Dana Wade. Brett Tobyne, who figured to be one of the team leaders, will miss the meet with a lingering back injury suffered last summer.

Bermel Says

"We need to play good, solid golf. There will be six Big 10 teams (Iowa, Illinois, Purdue, Indiana, Michigan, and Wisconsin) in the field, as well as Duke and Toledo. Those are all solid teams. We're hopeful Brett (Tobyne) is back for our next match. I am cautiously optimistic about this season. The fall season really helps a program set the table to get to the NCAA Championships. You can put yourself in great position (for the NCAA Championships) by playing well in the fall, or if you don't you're in a street fight during the spring."
