Jamie Bermel Named New Men's Golf Coach at Colorado State

Rams return all but one player from last year's NCAA Tournament qualifier.

July 29, 1999

Fort Collins, Colo. - Colorado State University Director of Athletics Tim Weiser today announced the appointment of Jamie Bermel as the Rams new men’s head golf coach.

“We are excited that Jamie Bermel will be joining our staff as the men’s golf coach,” said Weiser. “Jamie is an individual who has a great deal of experience as a head coach at the college level. He has succeeded wherever he has been and we expect that our program will continue to grow under his leadership and direction.

“Many outstanding candidates were interested in this position with the attractiveness of coaching a top-25 men’s golf program. Jamie was an individual that rose to the top because of his success and his background in the college coaching profession,” said Weiser.

Bermel has been the head golf coach at Iowa State for the past two seasons and guided the Cyclones to the NCAA Regionals in 1998. During his tenure in Ames, ISU won two tournaments and finished among the top five teams nine other times.

Prior to taking over at Iowa State, Bermel was the head coach at Drake University for five seasons, from 1992-97. His team won the 1997 Missouri Valley crown and boasted the league’s top individual finisher. He led the Bulldogs to NCAA appearances in 1996 and ‘97 and a 23rd place finish in the 1997 tournament.

Bermel’s teams were also successful in the classroom.

At Iowa State, four of his golfers earned Academic All-Big 12 honors and one player was named Academic All-American. He coached three Academic All-Americans at Drake. Six Bulldog competitors were named Academic All-Conference.

Bermel will assume his post in August. He is a 1986 graduate of Central College in Pella, Iowa. In 1988 he received a master’s degree from Purdue University.

Bermel inherits a team which has been to the NCAA tournament following each of the past four seasons. In 1999, led by the play of Nigel Spence and Robby Stephenson, the Rams not only earned an NCAA Regional berth, but advanced to the NCAA Championships for the first time ever. Colorado State has been consistently ranked among the top 25 teams nationally during the past four seasons. The Rams return all but one player who competed on that squad entering the 1999-2000 season.
