Spencer Levin Is SGA National Am of Month For June
July 6, 2004 Birmingham, Ala. - University of New Mexico golfer Spencer Levin has earned the Southern Golf Association's National Amateur of the Month Award for June. Levin, from Elk Grove, Calif., was low amateur at the U.S. Open and finished 13th - the best finish by an amateur in the Open since 1971. Levin followed that feat by promptly winning the California Amateur. A second-team All-America, Levin led the Lobos with a 70.58 scoring average this year. The award carries with it an automatic playing exemption into the 98th Southern Amateur next week near Chattanooga, where Levin will compete at the exclusive Honors Course. Honorable mention for June went to Michael Smith of Lafayette, La., who won the 32nd Southern Junior at the Sea Island (Ga.) Seaside Course. The monthly SGA award, now in its second year, is selected by a blue-ribbon panel of college golf coaches, golf writers and golf officials. Earlier winners this year were Camello Villegas of Florida; Southern Am reigning champ Casey Wittenberg, a freshman at Oklahoma State and John Holmes of Kentucky.
The 102-year-old SGA puts on three of the nation's top amateur tournaments, including the Southern Am and the Southern Junior.
