Cory Segall To Compete At U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship
Aztec sophomore heads to the Pacific Northwest next week
July 5, 2006 SAN DIEGO - San Diego State sophomore Cory Segall (La Jolla, Calif./La Jolla HS) will compete next week in the 81st Annual U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship, July 10-15, at Gold Mountain Golf Club in Bremerton, Wash. Segall earned a trip to the Evergreen State by carding a two-round score of 148 at the sectional qualifying tournament last month at Carlton Oaks Country Club in Santee, Calif. Segall has experienced prior success at the Gold Mountain complex, placing second at the University of Washington's Husky Invitational in the fall of 2003 as a redshirt freshman. Segall shot a three-round total of 215 (-1), leading the Aztecs to a runner-up finish at the nine-team collegiate event. The first two days of the tournament will consist of stroke play with the low 64 scorers moving on to match play. The championship culminates with 36 holes of match play with the winner earning an exemption to the Masters Tournament in Augusta, Ga.
The men's amateur public links is open to male amateur golfers who, since Jan. 1 of the calendar year, have been public course players and have not held privileges at any course that does not extend playing privileges to the general public. Previous champions of the men's amateur public links include current PGA players Trevor Immelman (1998), Tim Clark (1997) and Billy Mayfair (1986).
