Sacheck Claims Title at 100th Texas Amateur Championships

The TCU All-American recorded a 5-under-par score of 279 to claim the Texas Amateur title.

Former TCU standout James Sacheck (The Woodlands, Texas | Zionsville H.S.) captured the crown at the 100th Annual Texas Amateur Championships after recording a 72-hole score of 5-under-par 279 at the Miramont County Club in Bryan, Texas.

Sacheck - who was competing in his first-ever Texas Amateur Championship - shot a 4-under-par 67 in the final round to post a one-shot victory over Bronson Burgoon of Texas A&M and Johnathan Schnitzer of The University of Texas.

After firing a competitive course record of 7-under-par 64 after Friday's round, Sacheck took a commanding five-stroke advantage heading into the third round of action on Saturday. However; the TCU All-American posted a 7-over-par 78 and was six shots back of the tournament leader Burgoon heading into the final round of action on Sunday.

Sacheck put together a bogey-free fourth round, including a pair of birdies on both the front and back nine holes of action, to take a 5-under-par tournament tally into the clubhouse. The TCU All-American had to play the waiting game for Burgoon, who missed a five-foot putt on the 18th hole - which would have forced a playoff with Sacheck.

With the victory, Sacheck took custody of the H.L. Edwards Memorial Trophy, which is named in honor of Harry Lee Edwards - widely-considered the Father of Golf in the State of Texas. Edwards helped establish the TGA in February of 2006 and served as its first President.

A week after capturing the championship at the Southwestern Amateur, Travis Woolf (Fort Worth, Texas | Paschal H.S.) recorded a fourth-place finish at the Texas Amateur Championships as the TCU senior collected a 3-under-par score of 281 (74-65-69-73).

Sacheck and Woolf each automatically qualified for next year's championships, which will be held at the Royal Oaks County Club in Dallas, after finishing in the top-15 in the tournament standings.
