PINEHURST, N.C. - Former Colorado State men's golf standout John Hayes has moved into the first alternate spot for the 2005 U.S. Open. The announcement came Friday after Darren Clarke had withdrawn from the tournament to be with his wife who is undergoing cancer treatment. Former first alternate Conrad Ray of Palo Alto, Calif., will move into the field of 156 for next weekend's event.

Hayes was one of CSU's top players during his senior season in 2004-05 recording a five-over 221 to finish in a tie for 66th in the NCAA Regional Tournament. He posted two top 10 finishes during his final season with the Rams en route to a 73.08 stroke average ranking third on the team in the category.

"I'm really excited but at the same time I don't want to get my hopes up too high," commented Hayes on his opportunity. "It will be a great experience for me to get exposure to that kind of event. I'm really looking forward to it."

Hayes leaves for Pinehurst, N.C., on Sunday before appearing on ESPN's "Cold Pizza" on Monday morning. The U.S. Open begins Thursday, June 16 at the Pinehurst Resort (No. 2 Course) and continues through Sunday, June 19.
