Rebels Ranked 10th In Final Golfweek Poll UNLV's Southern Highlands Collegiate Championship field ranked No. 1 in strength of schedule for third year in a row.
June 6, 2006 LAS VEGAS - The UNLV men's golf team finished tied for 19th at the NCAA Championships last week, but only slipped from eighth to No. 10 in the nation as final edition of the Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index Ratings were released. National champion Oklahoma State jumped into the top spot, followed by Georgia, which spent the majority of the season ranked No. 1. Florida finished ranked third, followed by Georgia Tech, UCLA, Texas A&M, Arizona State, Clemson, BYU and UNLV. Individually, UNLV had three players make the top 100 with senior Andres Gonzales finishing the year ranked 36th, sophomore Jarred Texter coming in at 64th and sophomore C.J. Gatto at 98th. As a team, UNLV competed in 12 tournaments in 2005-06 and won two team titles (William H. Tucker Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M., in September and the Southern Highlands Collegiate Championship in Las Vegas in March). The Rebels turned in nine top-10 finishes including seven in the top five. Also, the Southern Highlands Collegiate Championship, the tournament that UNLV hosts each March at Southern Highlands Golf Club, had the toughest field of any tournament in the country this year including the NCAA Championships. It marked the third straight year that the Southern Highlands Collegiate had the top-ranked field. Golfweek rates all collegiate tournaments each season by strength of schedule.
