Open Season Five former Rebs to play in U.S. Open.
June 6, 2003 Former UNLV men's golfers Chad Campbell, Bill Lunde, Chris Riley, Warren Schutte and Adam Scott will play in the U.S. Open at Olympia Fields Golf Club in Olympia Fields, Ill., June 12-15. Campbell, who played for the Rebels from 1995-96, beat out 15 other golfers for the only qualifying spot at Kirtland Country Club in Cleveland. He carded scores of 72 and 67 to win the qualifier by five strokes. Lunde, a member of the 1998 national championship team, also won a sectional qualifier, shooting 67 and 68 (135) to post a three-stroke victory at El Caballero Country Club in Tarzana, Calif. Lunde defeated three players who all shot 138, including Schutte. Schuute won the 1991 individual national title. Riley and Scott earned full exemptions from the USGA based on their professional status.
Failing to earn a return trip to the Open was current All-American Ryan Moore. Moore, who played in his first U.S. Open at Bethpage Black last year, shot 72 and 77 at Washington National Golf Club in Auburn, Wash., and missed the only qualifying spot by 10 strokes.
