ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - University of New Mexico men's golfer Wil Collins was named Verizon second team academic All-America Thursday. Collins earned academic All-America honors for the third straight season with a 3.87 GPA in Travel and Tourism. The Verizon academic All-America team includes athletes from winter and spring sports, such as swimming, golf, gymnastics, tennis, hockey, wrestling, skiing and men¹s volleyball.

A native of Rapid City, S.D., Collins just completed his senior season at UNM with an appearance in the NCAA Championships. His 2001-02 stroke average of 73.28 is the 16th-lowest in school history. Collins finished the season with three top-10 finishes, including UNM¹s only individual victory of the year when he won the Adams Cup in Newport, R.I., in October. He was named all-Mountain West Conference for the third time in his career and he was also named first team academic All-District VI.

Collins was the winner of the 2001 Ben Hogan Award, honoring the top student-athlete in college golf. He won three tournaments during his UNM career.
