Zambian Zooms To Fore For UNM The Albuquerque Tribune Feature Story

By Edgar Thompson ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - When he was growing up in Zambia, Lobos freshman Madalitso Muthiya's passion for golf seemed to be a little misplaced. Soccer is the national sport in the impoverished nation, which is in south-central Africa. And golf, viewed in other countries as a game a person can enjoy for a lifetime, didn't seem to fit in where the life expectancy of the average male is only 37 years. "If you're growing up in Africa," Muthiya said, "it's impossible in a sport like golf to make it to a United States college."
