Colorado Springs, Colo. ­ In first round singles action of the individual portion of the 2000 NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Championship hosted by the University of Georgia, Wednesday all three Mountain West Conference representatives advanced in the 64-player draw. The event runs through Sunday, May 28 at the Dan Magill Tennis Center in Athens, Ga.

San Diego State freshman Oliver Maiberger started the day off right by posting a 7-5, 6-3 win over Josh Goffi from Clemson in the first round at 10:30 a.m. Maiberger play Stanford¹s Alex Kim, the tournament's No. 5 seed, in second round action.

San Diego State senior Alex Waske, also seeded in the 9-16 group, claimed a 6-2, 6-4 win over Michal Chmela of LSU in his first round match. Waske will next face Pepperdine¹s Robert Kendrick.

Seeded in the 9-16 group, New Mexico senior Matt Amgwerd defeated Dennis Lundberg from Tulane (7-6, 6-1) in his first round match. Amgwerd will meet UCLA¹s Jong-Min Lee in the second round.

Doubles play gets underway on Thursday with New Mexico¹s team of Amgwerd and Nic Dubey facing Doug Root and Ramsey Smith from Duke. BYU¹s duo of Gert Vilms and Damien Ward must face a No. 5-8 seed in the opening round. The Cougar team will play Baylor¹s team of David Hodge and Mark Williams.
