LARAMIE, Wyo. -

David Hearn Concludes His College Career at the 2001 NCAA West Regional: Wyoming senior David Hearn concluded the greatest career in University of Wyoming golf history on Saturday, May 19 placing 101st at the 2001 NCAA West Regional. Hearn shot a final round of 78 to finish with a three-round total of 231, 15-over par.

While Hearn didn't reach his goal of advancing on to the NCAA Championship, he is the only UW golfer in history to qualify for three consecutive NCAA Regionals. The 2001 NCAA West Regional was played at the Trysting Tree Golf Course in Corvallis, Ore. The course measured 7,060 yards and played to a par of 72. The tournament consisted of 141 collegiate golfers.

"What a great career David (Hearn) had here at Wyoming" said UW men's golf coach Roger Prenzlow. "Even though he wasn't able to move on to the NCAA Championship, he accomplished things at Wyoming that no one ever had before. He has set new standards for future Wyoming golfers to attain, and I'm very proud of the way he has represented our program through his four years.

"Now, we can look forward to following David's golf career from here. We wish him all the best in his future in golf."

The top 10 teams from the West Regional advanced on to the NCAA Championship plus the top two individuals, who were not a member of one of those Top 10 teams. The two individuals who advanced were Nick Watney of Fresno State, who tied for fourth place at 213, and Charleton Dechert of Oral Roberts, who tied for sixth place at 214. The Top 10 teams that advanced were: team champion Arizona State, along with Arizona, UC-Irvine, Pacific, South Carolina, Oregon State, Stanford, UCLA, Wake Forest and Washington. Arizona State won the tournament by 15 strokes over second-place Arizona, 852 to 867. Mountain West Conference members UNLV and San Diego State barely missed qualifying for the NCAAs, finishing 11th and 12th respectively. The NCAA Championship will be held on May 30-June 2 at the Duke University Golf Club..

The individual title for the West Regional ended in a tie between Matt Jones of Arizona State and Kyle Thompson of South Carolina. Both ended with 54-hole totals of 208, eight under par.

Hearn, a senior from Brantford, Ontario, made school history by qualifying for three consecutive NCAA West Regionals during his career. The only other UW men's golfers to reach the NCAA Regionals as individuals were: Dave McCleave in 1990 and Pat Fry in 1995. McCleave also was a member of the 1992 Wyoming squad which qualified for the NCAA West Regional as a team.
