TUCSON, Ariz. - University of Utah sophomore Dustin Pimm is in first place after the first round of the NCAA West Regional Men's Golf Championships at Tucson National golf course.

Pimm finished his round 6-under par on the Par-72 course. He was 2-under after 12 holes, starting his round on No. 10. He tallied eagles on No. 2 and No. 5 as he was coming in. He moved to as low as 7-under par with a birdie on No. 6, before tallying a bogey on No. 8 and finishing with a round of 66.

Pimm leads 141 golfers, who battled gusting, swirling winds and near-100-degree temperatures for much of the day.

"I played really well, I putted really well today," said Pimm. "It was not as hot as I thought it would be though. Tomorrow I don't think I can do much better than I did today, I owe it all to my putting."

Pimm has a one-stroke lead after 18 holes in the 54-hole event. Matt Avery, Billy Horschel, James Vargas of Florida and Colin Wilcox of Pepperdine are all 5-under after the first day of compeition.

The top 10 teams and the top two individuals not on advancing teams will move on to the NCAA Men's Golf Championship, slated for May 31-June 3, at the Crosswater Club at Sunriver Resort in Sunriver, Ore.

Pimm will begin his second-round action at 10:02 a.m. PDT Friday. The tournament wraps up Saturday.
