Sophomore All-MWC golfer Zen Brown and senior Derrick Whiting led the Rams on the first day of the NCAA Men's Golf West Regional at Karsten Golf Course in Tempe, Ariz., on Thursday.

"I thought we played pretty solid," commented head coach Jamie Bermel.

As a team, Colorado State shot a 4-under 284 and finished just three strokes out of the top-10 through day one in a tie for 15th.

Brown, finished in a tie for 21st, carding a 3-under 69 in his first round, tallying six birdies on the course. He currently sits just one stroke out of a tie for 12th place. Whiting posted a 2-under 70, battling back after sitting at 2-over through nine holes. He recorded an eagle on the par-5 fifth hole on the back nine after pulling even with back-to-back birdies on holes three and four.

"Whiting played pretty well," added Bermel. "He was up and down a little bit, but overall played well."

Dustin Morris also finished under par for the Rams, carding a 71 (-1), while Bryce Hanstad finished with a 74 (+2) and Aaron Weston finished one stroke behind Hanstad with a 75 (+3).

"We got off to a rough start but settled down and played pretty well overall. We'll get a little better tomorrow. We can be right there," said Bermel.

The Rams continue action tomorrow, teeing off at 6:30 a.m. PT. The Rams progress can be tracked live on www.GolfStat.com.
