MWC Garners Third National Player of the Year UNLV's Ryan Moore joins Utah's Alex Smith and Andrew Bogut for national honors.
May 17, 2005 UNLV senior golfer Ryan Moore was selected as the 2005 Ben Hogan Award winner, which was announced Saturday by Bank of America, in cooperation with Colonial Country Club, The Friends of Golf and the Golf Coaches Association of America. The most prestigious award in men's college golf, The Hogan is presented annually to the top men's NCAA Division I, II or III, NAIA or junior college golfer taking into account all collegiate and amateur competitions during the last 12 months. Moore joins Utah standouts Alex Smith and Andrew Bogut as national players of the year in their respective sport. Smith, who led the Utes to a 12-0 record, a No. 4 national ranking and a 35-7 victory over Pittsburgh in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl, was named National Player of the Year by the Sporting News and Sports Illustrated. Smith was selected as the top pick in the NFL draft, taken by the San Francisco 49ers. Bogut, a 7-0 center, led Utah to the MWC regular season championship, a No. 17 national ranking and a berth in the NCAA Sweet 16. Projected as a top five NBA pick, Bogut was honored as the top national collegiate player by earning the John R. Wooden Award and the Naismith Trophy. He was also named National Player of the Year by the United States Basketball Writers Association, the National Association of Basketball Coaches, Chevrolet/CBS Sports, the Associated Press, ESPN.com and Basketball Times.
