Colorado State Headed Toward NCAA Regionals Rams to vie for one of 10 spots in NCAA Championship.
May 14, 2002 FORT COLLINS, Colo. - For the seventh year in a row, Colorado State University's men's golf team will be competing in NCAA Regional competition, beginning Thursday in Albuquerque, N.M. The Rams, who tied for fifth in the Mountain West Conference Championships nearly two weeks ago, will be one of 27 teams and six individual players competing in the NCAA West Regionals, Thursday through Saturday at the University of New Mexico's Champoinship Course. Coach Jamie Bermel's five-member team will tackle the par 27, 7,368-yard course in the first of three rounds Thursday morning. Bermel, in his third season, finalized his team for the regionals. Sophomore Martin Laird, who leads the team in average per round, along with Dallas Massey, David Schultz, Tommy Sharp and Brett Tobyne will compete for the Rams. Laird won the MWC individual title, shooting a four-under-par 212 over three rounds. He averaged 73.82 per round to lead the Rams. Schultz, second on the team with a 74.0 per round, along with Sharp, 74.62, Massey, 75.14, and Tobyne, 75.41 join Laird in the lineup. Colorado State enters regional play as the 23rd seed. The Rams are one of five MWC teams in the West Region field. Host New Mexico, seeded sixth, along with eighth-seeded San Diego State, 17th-seeded UNLV, and 22nd-seeded BYU are also in the field. The top 10 teams and two individuals from the regional advance to the NCAA Championships, May 29 through June 1, at Ohio State University's Scarlet Course.
