LARAMIE, Wyo. -

The NCAA Division I Men's Golf Committee announced today the participants for the 2001 NCAA Regionals, and University of Wyoming senior David Hearn was selected as an individual for the NCAA West Regional. It is Hearn's third consecutive season to be named to the NCAA field as an individual. No other Wyoming golfer has ever earned invitations to the NCAAs in three consecutive seasons.

The NCAA West Regional will be held at the Trysting Tree Golf Course in Corvallis, Ore., and will be hosted by Oregon State University. There are a total of three NCAA Regionals. The East Regional will be contested at the Golden Horseshoe Golf Club in Williamsburg, Va., and will be hosted by Virginia Commonwealth University. Oklahoma State University will host the Central Regional at the Karsten Creek Golf Course in Stillwater, Okla. All three NCAA Regionals will be conducted on Thursday-Saturday, May 17-19, 2001. The NCAA Championship will be held on Wednesday-Saturday, May 30 - June 2 at the Duke University Golf Club in Durham, N.C., with Duke serving as the host institution.

Hearn, a senior from Brantford, Ontario, also made history a year ago when he qualified for his second consecutive NCAA Regional. No other UW golfer had earned two consecutive trips to the NCAAs prior to Hearn's. The only other UW men's golfers to reach the NCAA Regionals as individuals were: Dave McCleave in 1990 and Pat Fry in 1995. McCleave also was a member of the 1992 Wyoming squad which qualified for the NCAA West Regional as a team.

"David (Hearn) has earned this honor with his outstanding play this season," said UW men's golf coach Roger Prenzlow. "He has proved himself to be among the top collegiate players in the country over his career at Wyoming, and he has accomplished things that no other player has in school history.

"I know David is excited about returning to the NCAAs. He has both the game and the experience to have a great tournament. He came within a couple of places of moving on to the NCAA Championship as a sophomore, and I know that is a goal he wants to accomplish before his college career comes to an end."

"I'm very pleased to be given the opportunity to participate in this year's NCAA West Regional," said senior David Hearn. "I got off to a slow start with my injury this spring, so this is a great."

"My attitude and goals are the same as they've also been heading into the Regional, which will be to qualify for nationals. I'm very confident in my game right now, and look forward to the competition."

During the 2001 spring season, Hearn fought his way back from a wrist injury that hampered him early in the spring. He is coming off a 10th-place finish at the 2001 Mountain West Conference Championship where he also was named to the All-Conference team for the first time in his career. He has finished in the Top 10 individuals at each of the last three conference championships he has played. As a sophomore in 1999, Hearn tied for seventh out of 80 competitors at the Western Athletic Conference Championship. He went on to tie for 17th out of 93 competitors at the `99 NCAA West Regional. His junior season of 2000, Hearn tied for eighth out of 40 competitors at the inaugural Mountain West Conference Championship, and finished in a tie for 90th out of 141 competitors at the 2000 West Regional.

No Wyoming golfer has ever advanced to the NCAA Championship. Hearn will be looking to accomplish that feat in this his senior season.

Each NCAA Regional will consist of a total of 54 holes of golf with one 18-hole round being played on three consecutive days. The top 10 teams from each NCAA Regional and the top two individuals, who are not a member of one of those top 10 teams, will advance into the NCAA Championship.
