SDSU Men's Golf Earns Ninth Straight NCAA Regional Bid Aztecs to compete in West Regional, May 17-19, in Tempe, Ariz.
May 7, 2007 INDIANAPOLIS - San Diego State earned a bid to the NCAA men's golf regional for the ninth consecutive year when the Aztecs were selected to compete in the West Regional championships, May 17-19, in Tempe, Ariz., the NCAA announced on Monday. SDSU received the No. 16 seed out of 27 teams in the West Regional, which will be conducted on Arizona State University's 7,057-yard, par-72 Karsten Golf Course. The Aztecs are among 81 NCAA Division I schools invited to play in one of three regional events. The other two regional tournaments will be held concurrently in Alpharetta, Ga. (East) and Sugar Grove, Ill. (Central). The West Regional will consist of 54 holes over a three-day period with 18 holes contested each day. The top 10 teams and two individuals not on advancing teams will move on from each regional to the championship finals, which will take place May 30-June 2 at the Golden Horseshoe Golf Course in Williamsburg, Va. The Aztecs are making their 12th appearance in the tournament since the field was expanded to include regional competition in 1989 and will be looking to advance to the national championships for the 19th time in school history. SDSU has advanced to the championship series three times (1999, 2003 and 2005) since the regional format made its debut. The Aztecs recently played at Karsten Golf Course during the ASU Thunderbird Invitational last month. Junior Aaron Goldberg (Encinitas, Calif.) notched his second-best score of the season when he carded a 9-under-par 207 to finish alone in fourth place out of 84 competitors. As a team, San Diego State placed 12th with a 14-over 878 for the tournament.
