Five MWC Men's Golf Teams Headed For Regionals
Three regional tournaments will be conducted May 15-17.
May 6, 2003 COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The NCAA Monday announced the participants for its three Division I men's golf regionals sites for the 106th NCAA Championship. Washington will serve as the host school for the West Regional to be held at Washington National Golf Club in Auburn, Wash. May 15-17. Kansas State will host the Central Regional at Colbert Hills Golf Course in Manhattan, Kan. and Auburn will host the East Regional at its University Club. The low 10 teams and the low two individuals not on those teams from each NCAA regional will advance to the NCAA Championships to be held at Karsten Creek in Stillwater, Okla. May 27-30. The practice round (8 a.m. PDT) and tournament competition are free to the public. Parking is available at Washington National Golf Club and in designated areas along the streets adjacent to the golf course. The Field A total of 27 teams and six individuals from across the country have qualified for the 2003 NCAA West Regional. In order of seeding, the field includes: 1. UCLA, 2. UNLV, 3. Arizona, 4. Georgia, 5. Arizona State, 6. Washington, 7. New Mexico, 8. USC, 9. Pepperdine, 10. San Diego State, 11. California, 12. Fresno State, 13. Cal-Irvine, 14. Brigham Young, 15. Colorado State, 16. UTEP, 17. Denver, 18. Oregon, 19. Austin Peay, 20. Stanford, 21. Oregon State, 22. Old Dominion, 23. Xavier, 24. Oral Roberts, 25. Navy, 26 Central Connecticut State and 27. Loyola. Individual qualifiers are Matt Hansen of Pacific, Brendan Steele of Cal State Riverside, Travis Bertoni of Cal Poly, Issac Weintraub of San Jose State, Pete Sisich of Cal State Northridge and Graham DeLaet of Boise State. Format Fifty-four holes of stroke play golf over three days of competition shall decide the team and individual champions. The tournament features 18 holes of play on each date starting at 7:12 a.m. PDT. The final group tees off at 1:21 p.m. PDT. Participants will play in threesomes during the competition. Teams participating in the NCAA regionals shall consist of a maximum of five players (with four scores counting each day toward the team total). First and second round team pairings are determined by seeding. Following the second round of competition, team scores shall determine the pairings. Split tees (#1 and #10) will be used during each round. Team and individual ties shall be broken in accordance with NCAA rules. MWC Flavor Five of the eight Mountain West Conference schools earned bids to the NCAA West Regional. 2003 marks the fourth consecutive year that the MWC has qualified at least five teams. Noting the Teams The 2003 NCAA West Regional features 18 teams ranked in the top-50 in this week's Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index. That list includes No. 6 Arizona, No. 10 UNLV, No. 11 UCLA, No. 13 Georgia, No. 16. Arizona State, No. 17 New Mexico, No. 19 Washington, No. 25 Pepperdine, No. 28 UC Irvine, No. 29 Southern California, No. 31 San Diego State, No. 34 Fresno State, No. 38 UTEP, No. 39 California, No. 41 BYU, No. 44 Denver, No. 46 Colorado State and No. 49 Oregon ... The list of team includes 12 conference champions: Pac-10 (UCLA), Mountain West (New Mexico), West Coast (Pepperdine), Western Athletic (Fresno State), Cal-Irvine (Big West), Ohio Valley (Austin Peay), Colonial Athletic (Old Dominion), Atlantic-10 (Xavier), Mid-Continent (Oral Roberts), Patriot League (Navy), Northeast (Central Connecticut State) and Metro Atlantic Athletic (Loyola, MD) ... Seven of the teams at the West Regional will be attempting to return to the NCAA Championships. Last year's qualifiers included UNLV, Arizona, Georgia, Washington, New Mexico, Pepperdine and Fresno State. Noting the Individuals There are 17 individual golfers ranked among the top 50 in the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings in the regional field. That list includes No. 5 Nick Watney (Fresno State), No. 10 Ricky Barnes (Arizona), No. 11 Chris Nallen (Arizona), No. 16 Ryan Moore (UNLV), No. 19 Brock Mackenzie (Washington), No. 23 Alejandro Canizares (Arizona State), No. 26 Michael Letzig (New Mexico), No. 29 Kevin Kisner (Georgia), No. 30 Peter Tomasulo (California), No. 32 Jim Seki (Stanford), No. 33 David Denham (Georgia), No. 36 Steve Conway (UCLA), No. 37 Chez Reavie (Arizona State), No. 40 Martin Laird (Colorado State), No. 47 Roy Moon (UCLA), No. 48 Dan Swanson (UTEP) and No. 50 John Merrick (UCLA) ... among the individuals playing in this year's regional are two amateurs who played in the 2003 Masters. Arizona's Ricky Barnes was 21st at 3-over 291 while UNLV's Ryan Moore was 45th at 13-over 301. ... Arizona's Ricky Barnes tied for the NCAA West Regional individual championship last season ... The Course Washington National Golf Club opened in August of 2000. Under a sponsorship agreement between Washington National and the University of Washington, it is the official home for the Washington men's and women's golf teams. The course is managed by Heritage Golf Group. For the NCAA West Regional, Washington National will play as a par-72 at 7,183 yards. The NCAA West Regional will be the fourth collegiate event to be held at the facility. The NCAA Division I women's championship, won by Duke, was held at the course last year. Spectators Spectators must remain on the cart paths or in the rough and approximately 15 yards from the players at all times (including practice areas). There may be no communication between players and spectators that could be deemed advice of any nature for the duration of the 18 holes. All institutional personnel, with the exception of the designated coach, are considered spectators. Ringers on electronic devices must be turned off. Spectators must refrain from smoking near the players. Carts will not be provided for spectators. Last Year's West Regional Results
Washington and New Mexico tied for the team championship at the Lobos' Championship Course in Albuquerque. Both teams finished at 8-over. Only 11 strokes separated the top 12 teams at the tournament. Arizona's Ricky Barnes and Minnesota's Justin Smith shared medalist honors at 6-under 210. The other team to qualify from the regional were UNLV, Minnesota (2002 NCAA Champion), Pepperdine, Arizona, Pacific, Texas, Fresno State and Texas Tech.
