UNLV Claims Inaugural Mountain West Conference Men's Golf Championship

    Palm Desert, Calif. - UNLV shot a nine-under par in the third round to claim the Mountain West Conference Men's Golf Championship in Palm Desert, Calif., at the PGA West Nicklaus Tournament Course (Par 72, 6,921 yds.). It was the Rebels' second conference title in three years. Three Rebels came in under par in the final round of the Championships and as a team, UNLV finished 19-under after three rounds of play. New Mexico finished 23 shots back in second at 868, followed by Colorado State (870), BYU (877), San Diego State (897), Utah (899), Wyoming (906) and Air Force (921).

    UNLV's Michael Kirk led all players with 209, seven-under par. All five UNLV players finished in the top 10. Colorado State's Nigel Spence finished in second with 210, followed by Scott Piercy of San Diego State with 211.

    Note - The NCAA Division I Men's Golf Tournament selections will be announced Tuesday, May 9. The NCAA Regionals will be played at three sites, May 18-20. The 2000 Men's Golf Championship is slated for May 31-June 3 at The Lake Course at the Grand National Golf Club Complex in Opelika, Alabama.
