2008 Mountain West Conference Men's Golf Awards Announced at Conclusion of Championship
April 26, 2008 TUCSON, Ariz. - The Mountain West Conference announced its 2008 Men's Golf All-Conference team and individual awards at the conclusion of its championship today at the OMNI Tucson National Golf Course. San Diego State claimed both individual awards as senior Aaron Goldberg was selected as player of the year and Matt Hoffenberg was named freshman of the year. Coach of the year honors went to Jamie Bermel of Colorado State. This is the just the second time in the nine-year history of the league that golfer and freshman of the year honors have come from the same institution. UNLV's Ryan Moore won MWC Golfer of the Year and teammate Jarred Texter was MWC Freshman of the Year in 2004-05. Goldberg ranked second in the Mountain West Conference and 42nd nationally, according to the most recent GolfWeek rankings, with a 71.11 stroke average. He recorded 10 finishes within the top-10 in 2007-08 and is a three-time all-conference performer. Goldberg is the third Aztec to garner Conference's top award and first since 2002 when John Lieber captured the award. Hoffenberg garners freshman of the year honors after posting a 71.75 stroke average this season, which currently ranks third in the MWC and 66th nationally. He collected four top 10 finishes this season and is the first MWC Freshman of the Year honoree from San Diego State. Jaime Bermel captured MWC Coach of the Year honors for the second time in his career and first time since 2003-04.
