MWC Men's Golfer of the Month New Mexico's Hailes garners honor for first time this season.
April 24, 2002 COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - New Mexico senior Scott Hailes was named Mountain West Conference Men's Golfer of the Month for April after pacing the Lobos to two top 10 finishes at the Border Olympics in Lubbock, Texas and Arizona State Thunderbird Invitational in Tempe, Ariz. Hailes placed in the top 10 in both tournaments and has now posted three straight top 10 finishes in a row after managing no higher than 14th place in the first eight outings this year. He finished tied for seventh at the Border Olympics after carding a three-under 54-hole total of 213, including back-to-back 68's to end the tournament. Hailes shot an eight-under 208 (68-66-74) to finish tied for seventh at the ASU Thunderbird Invitational. The three-round 208 was his lowest total of the season and the 10th best score over 54 holes in UNM history. Hailes posted a 70.17 stroke average during the month and moved in the top spot on the Mountain West Leaderboard with a season average of 72.24.
