CSU Captures Barona Collegiate Cup

Four Rams finish in the top 20.

SAN DIEGO - The Colorado State men's golf team won their third tournament of the fall season and their second in a row by winning the Barona Collegiate Cup today. This is the first time a team from Colorado State has won three tournaments in a single season.

The team began play in the Barona Collegiate Cup on Monday by firing a first round score of 273, their second lowest score of the season and the third best in school history. The second round was cut short due to darkness but was finished this morning. The team carded a 282 in round two and finished with a 281 in round three, bringing their three round total to 836, six strokes ahead of second place UTEP who finished in second. The team has not finished lower than fourth in their last four tournaments.

The Rams had four players finish in the top 20 for the second straight tournament and the third time this year, and was once again led by the seniors. Martin Laird was the team's top finisher after carding rounds of 68, 69, and 69, respectively, giving him a three-round total of 206 to place fourth. His total ties his lowest of the year. Fellow senior Nolan Martin was close behind at 208 following rounds of 69, 70, and 69, respectively. Martin finished tied for seventh, his fourth straight top ten finish. The team's next best finisher was John Hayes who tied for 14th, his best finish of the year. His three round total was 210. Sophomore Kevin McAlpine was the fourth Ram golfer to finish in the top 20, finishing in a tie for 18th after recording scores of 68, 71, and 73, respectively. James Kurtenbach rounded out the field for the Rams, finishing tied for 79th.

The individual winner was Chris Baryla of UTEP, shooting 17 under par with a total of 199.

The team's next tournament is The Nelson which begins on October 25 in Palo Alto, Calif. The event will be the last of the fall season for the Rams and is being hosted by Stanford.
