ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The University of New Mexico men's golf team shot a final round 293 (+9) to finish 26th at the NCAA Championships in Columbus, Ohio, Saturday afternoon. UNM finished with a team score of 1,170 (+34) at the Scarlet Course on the campus of Ohio State University. The Lobos were one stroke behind Pacific and Texas Tech, who each tied for 24th at 1,169 (+33). Minnesota won the team title with a 72-hole total of 1,134 (-2). The Gophers shot 278 (-6) on Saturday to overtake third round leader Georgia Tech. The Yellow Jackets shot 285 (+1) to finish at 1,138 (+2), good for second place.

UNM was consistent throughout the tournament, shooting 293-291-293-293 in its four rounds. The Lobos played all four rounds in the NCAA Championships for the first time since 1997, when they finished T6th. Up until 2002, only the top 15 teams after two rounds made the cut and played the final 36 holes of the tournament. There was no cut in the 2002 NCAA Championships.

Individually, UNM was led by senior Scott Hailes who shot 287 (+3) to finish T38th in the 156-player field. Hailes shot even-par 71 on Saturday, and played his final 36 holes at three-under. He came into the NCAA Championships on a streak of five consecutive top-10 finishes. Junior Michael Letzig was the next lowest Lobo, as he shot 293 (+9), good for an 80th-place tie. Letzig shot 73 on Saturday. Freshman Madalitso Muthiya, who led UNM with back-to-back rounds of 72 in the first two days, shot a final-round 79 (+8) to finish at 298 (+14) in his first NCAA Championship appearance. He was T117th overall. Fellow frosh Jay Reynolds carded a 299 (+15), including a final-round 72, to finish T124th. Senior Wil Collins rounded out the Lobo team at 303 (+19), T142nd. Georgia Tech¹s Troy Matteson won the individual title at 276 (-8), one stroke ahead of TCU¹s Adam Rubinson.
