HOT SPRINGS, Va. - The University of New Mexico men's golf team is currently in 17th placer after the first round of the NCAA Championships. The Lobos shot an opening round 11-over par 291 on the par-70, 6,679 yard, The Cascades Course at The Homestead Resort in Hot Springs, Va. New Mexico trails the opening round leader California-Berkley by 12 strokes as the Bears shot a 1-under par 279 and lead BYU by one stroke.

Individually the Lobos were led by junior Madalitso Muthiya with an even par round of 71 to end the opening round tied for 20th. Sophomore Spencer Levin was next for UNM with a 2-over par 73 and is tied for 52nd. Other individual New Mexico results are junior Jay Reynolds is 3-over par (73), tied for 65th, freshman Charlie Beljan is 6-over par (76), tied for 121st and sophomore Jay Choi is 7-over par (77), tied for 132nd.

The overall individual lead belongs to Jeff Hood of California-Berkley with a 5-under par 65 and leads Kevin Kisner of BYU and Adam Meyer of TCU by one stroke.

The NCAA Championships continue tomorrow with the second of four rounds at The Cascades Coures at The Homestead Resort in Hot Springs, Va. with tee times beginning at 7:00 AM (EST). New Mexico is scheduled to tee off at 7:18 AM (EST) with updated statistics at www.golfstat.com
