SUNRIVER, Ore. - The No. 8 UNLV men's golf team shot an opening-round 5-over-par 293 on Wednesday and is tied for 20th, 16 shots off the lead, after the first round of play at the 109th NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championships at Crosswater Golf Course (par 72, 7,630 yards) at the Sunriver Resort.

Wake Forest occupies the tournament's top spot after taking advantage of a calm, sunny morning by firing an opening-round 11-under 277 and leads second-place UCLA by three shots. The Bruins' 8-under round was played during a windy afternoon, conditions that UNLV saw as well.

Washington and Oklahoma State are tied for third at 7-under 281 and are followed by Clemson (-6) in fifth and Kentucky (-5) in sixth. Florida, North Carolina State and Oklahoma are all tied for seventh at 4-under. East Tennessee State rounds out the top 10 at 2-under, nine shots back.

Defending NCAA Champion Georgia is tied with the Rebels at 5-over.

Wake Forest's Kyle Reifers shot an opening-round 7-under 65 and leads all individuals after the first 18 holes. Oklahoma State's Pablo Martin and USC's Taylor Wood are tied for second at 6-under.

UNLV's top individual during the first round was sophomore Matt Kinsinger, who shot a 1-under 71.

Other Rebel scores: freshman Seung-Su Han (+1, 73; T68th), sophomore C.J. Gatto (+2, 74; T83rd), sophomore Jarred Texter (+3, 75; T99th) and senior Andres Gonzales (+4, 76. T118th).

The NCAA Championships will continue with 18 holes each day on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. After Friday's round, the field will be cut to the top 15 teams and top six individuals not on an advancing team for Saturday's final round.
