The University of New Mexico men's golf team shot a second round 291 (+7) and is in 27th place after 36 holes of the 2002 NCAA Championships in Columbus, Ohio. The Lobos, who completed their first round early Thursday due to weather delays on Wednesday, improved by two strokes in the second round. New Mexico shot 293 in the first round and is at 584 (+16) heading into Friday's third round. Clemson and Georgia Tech lead the tournament after 36 holes at 563 (-5), while Toledo (564, -4) is one stroke back. Individually, UNM was led by true freshman Madalitso Muthiya for the second straight day. Muthiya duplicated his opening round of 72, and is at 144 (+2) through 36 holes. He is tied for 53rd place. Muthiya birdied his sixth hole to sit at one-under, but had back-to-back bogies on nine and 10, before a birdie on 16 got him back to even. He bogeyed the 18th hole to finish with a second-round 72. Junior Michael Letzig had UNM's best round of the day, shooting even-par 71, to finish with a two-round total of 147 (+5). Letzig was one-over par through 14 holes, but birdied 15 and 16 to get to one-under. However, he bogeyed 18 to fall back to even for the day. Scott Hailes and Wil Collins each shot 74 (+3) to round out UNM's scoring foursome. Washington's Brock Mackenzie leads the individual field at 135 (-7).
